Default A new member new to Guild Wars needing help

Hi all how are ya!!!!

I am new here, hoping to make friends of course!

Ok....so the story is that I have decided to play Guild wars.....Currently I play CS 1.6, Diablo 2, both are excellent, but I want to play something like MMORPG like WOW....and it consumes my broadband, monthly fee, etc. Plus, I heard the patches take ages to download. SO my preference is Guild Wars.

Just like any other newbies....I have several questions to ask:

1. What makes GW better than WOW? Sure, each has pros and cons, but other than monthly fees, what makes GW > WOW? I also heard GW is more PvP oriented, which is excellent, because that is what I do in Diablo 2.

2. There is Guildwars...nightfall...factions...eye of the north...guildwars 2.... What are these?!?!? Which one do people play most? Are they expansions?

3. Do many people still play GW?

Well...that is all for now...I really am sorry for asking too many questions >_<
But I am truly honestly confused

If I have questions i will be sure to ask here!

Thanks a lot, peace! Hope to be joining you soon in GW!!!!

welcome to gw
1. havent really played wow but my friends always talk about the grind involved in it so if you dont like grind that is a plus in gw. there are a lot of ppl who focus on pvp but there is a lot of pve too. easy to do both bec you can just make a pvp char when you want it.

2. guildwars(also called prophecies) is the original, there are also factions and nightfall. these are all stand alone campaigns that then meld together to form one game. you can play with just one or get all 3. eye is an expansion pack that requires you to have one of the other 3 in order to play. guild wars 2 is not out yet and prob wont be out for at least a year.

3.yes there are a lot of ppl still playing gw.

if you are interested in pvp they are about to come out with a new type of pvp that should also help you get used to the different skills in pvp and still not be at too much of a disadvantage.

hope that helps

when you get the game pm me in game if you need help

the reason i believe is the PvP structure, it is pretty awesom

the origional is prophacies then factions then night fall eotn is an expansion to the prophacies campaign . factions is were u can recieve an assasin or ritualist
night fall is were u can recieve a dervish or paragon

yes lots of ppl play guild wars couple million i believe

if u have more questions ill gladly answer them in here or u can pm me in here or even add me to friends in the game i have 43 months experiance in the game

Wow, thanks for the really quick and warm welcome here

What does grind mean by the way?

Hmmm....I will try...

1. Ok, so, There are 3 Guild wars "stand-alone" games. Prophecies (original), Factions, then Nightfall. In order to be able to play EoTN, I have to have Prophecies? What is the good thing about buying all 4? Because I plan on buying all 4 anyway

2. Guild Wars 2 has not been released yet, I hope it will be better than WoW?

3. From YOUR opinion, what makes you think GW > WoW?

Yeah, I know I have so many questions...but right now I cannot think of any >_<

Oh, and a off topic quesiont :P Is the music in GW good?

Thanks a lot all!

First of GW is more about skill than gear. its more complicated because you can only have 8 skills max on your bar meaning you have to choose your skills wisely.

Guild Wars Eye of The North is the expansions the rest of the games(Guild Wars Prophecies, Nightfall , Fractions) are just chapters in the storyline. And people dont play one chapter more or less.

Think of it this way: there are 3 continents in Guild Wars. Prophecies (originally just called Guild Wars), Factions, and Nightfall each give you access to a particular one of the 3 continents. Characters can travel between any of the continents that you have access to. Eye of the North is an actual expansion pack that adds more stuff in one of the continents for high-level characters. GW2 is an actual sequel that isn't out yet.

there not stand alone campaigns once you get to the main city you can take a quest and travel to each campaign(as long as you have em)

Prophs Factions and nf are all standalone games. Don't get it twisted. Eotn is the only expansion requiring you to have one of the above mentioned campaigns.

Buy the 3 in 1 campaign package - its cheaper than buying them separately. Add the EoTN expansion later if you really like GW.

Join a friendly helpful guild. Having guild mates to chat and ask for advice/help really enhance GW.

Start on prophecy first - its the lowest learning curve.

Never played WoW but with GW there are no monthly fees

GW is a unique MMO of it's class, none other are like it. Comparing GW to WoW (and WoW is a common type MMO isn't really fair enough).

Basically there are no pros or cons, each game has it's own greatness, however what kind of pro's GW over WoW is that it is free of monthly fees making it possible to play on and off not worrying about having to keep an account charged up with a subscription, it's always there.

Most will give you basic stuff like, WoW you can jump and reach level 80, GW you can't jump and can only reach level 20 but people who bluntly say these things are in no position to even use their brains fully.

For PvP, you'll wanna get sharper with GW before you do any of that but there are some really great PvP players out there who can help you with that once your ready. You can also create level 20 characters for pvp only areas right off the start if you wish.

Guildwars (original game also called Guildwars: Prophecies) was released in April 2005. GW: Factions was released in April 2006, Nightfall in Oct 2006 and EoTN (eye of the north), July 2007 (i think). Every game EXCEPT EoTN is standalone. Guildwar's client downloads everything, so don't bother with the CD's of each game but you will wanna of course pay attention to the serial keys. What standalone means though for GW s is you don't have to have all games, you can have just one.

Each game has a key that comes with the box, all you need to do is have GW downloaded (or installed from CD but those are outdated content, as GW is an online MMO). You can have one game, a couple or all games. Basucally as you get another game you just add the key to your existing account in which you made with a key from one of the games, so they ARE sorta like expansions to someone expanding their account, but they are standalone as i said. To Play Eye of the North you need at least ONE guildwars account that has access to at least one of the 3 standalone games, more are of course good but you need at least one to be able to play EoTN as it's just a basic expansion primarily to a full GW account.

3. Do many people still play GW?
Of Course!

Don't listen to anyone who says the game is dead or anyone who explains GW in a couple words like "speed clears" or "build wars" just play your own game and enjoy it! Best advice I can give is to try and learn lots of things yourself as it seems these days people in the game all do nothing but follow the same bandwagon. You can play alone or with other people. If you wish not to play with other people there are henchmen NPC's that can come with you on your questing or a mission.

You didn't ask a lot of questions, I think you'll be asking more soon though and don't be confused, I learned it all by myself in early 2006 playing for the first time before factions came out, it dosen't take long to learn.

Cool, I would check out Newegg.com as they often have specials.

So do we. Have you checked out guildwars2guru?

Guild Wars is all about skills. As mentioned above there are a lot of skills, but you only get to select eight of them for use at any one time. While unlocking the skills with a PvE toon takes longer, you will find it much easer than trying to use faction points (gained in PvP) to unlock all of the skills.
Another factor is that only towns are open, all explorables are instanced. In short, no loot/boss stealing as happens so often in WoW. You form parties in towns then exit the town into an instanced zone to do your quest or mission with only the party members with you.

Not really off topic, as I see it. Yes, the music is good, better than most games. The worse music was the battle music for NightFall, it is not the music itself, it is how it is implamented. The battle music is often cut off or starts too late. There are music packs available if you want to explore the higher quality options.

Thanks so much! Wow nice people in this forum haha

Wait...Dzjudz said it is better for me to buy the collection pack (4 in 1) box.

However, Chrisworld said

"Guildwar's client downloads everything, so don't bother with the CD's of each game but you will wanna of course pay attention to the serial keys"

So...should I get the 4 in 1 box?

But Im sure many people will agree, installing all 4 is more rewarding than just one, correct?

I am in Australia...not sure if Electronics Boutique still sell them >_<

the 4 in 1 box basically contains the serials needed to play. the discs themselves are worthless.

GW's client will download all the content from all the campaigns and expansion. however, you'll need the individual serials to play those content.

they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and a video is... well, thousands of pictures. with that in mind, i suggest you visit these two youtube channels:

http://www.youtube.com/user/SabreWolf18
http://www.youtube.com/user/aliasmoriz

sabrewolf's channel contains many good guides about individual aspects of GW. my channel consists of a lot of GW's pvp gameplay. hopefully you'll find them useful.

Thanks Moriz

I am planning on buying the PC Guild Wars The Complete Collection New & Sealed from Ebay.

So basically its a 4 in 1 collection box consisting of original GW (Prophecies), Factions, Nightfall, and Eye of The North.

Just before I buy it, I need you guys opinion. Is this what I should buy?

And also, no one has naswered my questions yet :P It is obviously more rewarding to play all 4 instead of just one?

Thanks again

generally, yes. you'll have a much better experience having all three campaigns and the expansion. you'll have access to all 10 professions as well as having the ability to unlock every skill in the game.

Alright....So it is decided I will buy the Collector's Edition 4 in 1 box then?

I am sure I have asked too many questions....I am so annoying now sorry >_< so that is why these are my last questions (hopefully):

1. Komma said:
"ProTip: when installing guildwars games make sure you link them together not install them each as seperate accounts."

What does that mean? Im scared hahaha

2. Is there a link that gives a very detailed explanation on the basics of GW? Like what each skill does, item does, what profession does etc etc?

Once again, sorry for asking too many and thanks for the great help!

1. If you were buying the games individually you would get 1 serial number for each game and would have to register each one in turn to the same account. However as you're buying the Complete Collection you will only get one serial number, so when you have installed the game you can setup a new account with your email address and password (make sure it is secure) and just add the one serial number to register all the games.

2. The best place to find information would be the wiki: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page it has plenty of information including skill descriptions and profession guides.

Good luck and enjoy the game.

So bsoltan, you are saying it is easier for me to buy the complete collection because I will only have to use 1 serial number, compared to buying individually, where I have to put in all 4 serial numbers?

I still do not know the account creation yet, but I assume you create an account, and then inside that account, you install nightfall/factions/etc? Is this correct?
